故事說：葡萄牙商船遠洋來中國做貿易，從葡國出發的時候，船上的貨物不多，得找幾塊長條石塊壓壓艙底，不然船就不穩；到澳門後，買了大量的貨品，船艙滿了，不用這些石條，造成小石塊，鋪了一條又一條的街道，人們稱為「石仔路」。
在澳門，連走在街上石仔路響起的跫音，也回響著16世紀海洋的波浪聲，20世紀90年代開始臨別的葡國人把自己老家的街道裝飾風格搬來了澳門。在里斯本，甚至整個葡萄牙的村鎮裡，幾乎都鋪著這些黑黑白白的碎石。它們是呈平行六面體的雪花岩或石灰岩。巧匠們以白石為底，黑石為點線，拼湊出千變萬化的圖案......
這些帶著異國風情的碎石路裝飾，出現在里約熱內盧；出現在紐約；出現在夏威夷；最後，帶著葡萄牙人的戀戀深情，植根在澳門的土地上。今天，你漫步澳門遊客區的馬路與廣場，足下敲起的，可是大西洋彼岸一個民族的集體回憶。然而，這些回憶己被澳門繼承了，也被澳門的遊客繼承了；它們不只是街道裝飾，更成了澳門的標誌之一。
對這些石仔而言，不管是在西方還是東方，它們的使命都是一樣：裝飾路面，承受踐踏。它們默默地為人們奉獻著美感的享受，也默默地堅忍著每一人走過，承載著他們的喜怒哀樂，悲歡離合.....
